Empowering Global Transactions: Enhanced features on Rupay Card for International Transactions

Canara Bank is one of the early banks to introduce International Rupay Credit and Debit Cards and along with NPCI, it is in continuous pursuit of improving the international experience for Customers. 

Accordingly, for providing convenient and seamless payment experience to Rupay Card holders, NPCI has requested the member banks to enable the MOTO (Mail Order Telephone Order) Transactions, Card Account Verification (CAV), Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), Card Not Present E-Comm, Non-Pin POS and Contactless transactions. Canara Bank has implemented these changes on Rupay card for international transactions.

6 New Transaction Types on Rupay Card for International Transactions

1. MOTO (Mail Order Telephone Order)

A MOTO transaction is a Card-Not-Present transaction where the cardholder provides the merchant with their order and payment details by regular mail or telephone requests. The request is initiated by the details provided by the cardholder through mail or telephone.

In Cardholder Present MOTO transaction, a manual key entered transaction is used on merchant terminals where the customer is present, and the card number is manually entered to process the transaction.

2. CAV (Card Account Verification)

A Card Account verification (CAV) is a transaction which allows an acquirer to send a CAV request to an Issuer to verify the integrity of the card. This helps the card acceptor or the merchant to perform a check on the card status prior to initiating a purchase transaction to ensure a better success rate.

Issuers shall validate the card status, account status, eligibility for international transaction and respond to the transaction message. Thus, the success rate of the approved transactions can be ensured.

3. DCC (Dynamic Currency Conversion)

Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is a service offered by merchants or Banks/ Financial Institutions at the Point of Sale (POS) & Ecom or ATM to the cardholders to pay for goods or services in their own billing currency or in the merchant’s own local currency. The merchant or acquirer performs currency conversion locally and submits the transaction in the cardholder’s billing currency.

4. International Card Not Present E-Comm Transaction

With Card Not Present (CNP) E-Com transactions Rupay customers can use their card on international merchant site with or without Additional Factor Authentication (AFA/ 2FA), where issuer shall validate transaction basis card number, CVV and Expiry date.

For Domestic (transactions initiated from India/ India merchant site), RBI has made Additional Factor Authentication (AFA/ 2FA), mandatory, but for international merchants, merchants may choose or not choose to ask for Additional Factor Authentication (AFA/ 2FA).

5. International Non-PIN POS Transaction

Non-PIN International POS transactions are card present transactions without PIN. The transaction is performed in contact mode; however, PIN is not asked at the terminal basis the regulations/ guidelines in the respective geography.

6. International Contactless Transaction

Contactless transactions have become a popular mode of transaction internationally. Post pandemic customers and merchants prefer to transact digitally in contactless mode even in physical stores. It is also popular in transit solution. Per day transaction limit for international contactless transactions is Rs. 25000/- (Rupees twenty-five thousand only) is allowed.
